About Detourmap
A free interactive world map of 39,832 places worth going out of your way for, in 233 countries: parks, mountains, waterfalls, caves, volcanoes and coves and ancient ruins, tombs, ghost towns, shipwrecks, catacombs, mines, battlefields and crash sites. Every one of them is on the map at once, each with its photograph and its story. No account needed.

How it is made
Everything on the map comes from open data: the places, their coordinates and their dates from Wikidata, photographs from Wikimedia Commons, the story on each card from the opening of its Wikipedia article, and the basemap from OpenFreeMap. A place is here because Wikidata files it under one of the classes this atlas carries and it has coordinates on Earth, a photograph and a Wikipedia article. Nothing is written or chosen by an AI.
The fame ranking is how many Wikipedia language editions cover a place. That is why most of the map is places almost nobody has heard of: a hidden gem clears the same bar as the Colosseum, and the map draws them the same size. Its four tiers (Iconic, Renowned, Notable and Hidden gem) are the one filter on the map.
What earns a place on the map
Worth a detour, in the sense the Michelin guides gave the words: a place someone would go out of their way to see. The atlas carries what nature made and what people left behind. Castles, churches, museums, gardens and theme parks left it in August 2026, because they made it bigger without making it better; castles have their own map at Castle Map.
The photographs
Every photograph is a free file on Wikimedia Commons, and every card names who took it and under which licence, with a link to the file. Most are CC BY or CC BY-SA, which ask for exactly that; the photographs whose author nobody knows say so.
UniqueGuessr
UniqueGuessr is the map's guessing game: one photograph, no name, one tap on the world map. The closer you land, the more of 5,000 points you keep, and every answer is a real place on the map.
Missing a place, or spotted a mistake?
The best route is its Wikidata entry: a place with coordinates, a photograph and a Wikipedia article joins the map at the next refresh, and a correction there helps everyone else who uses the same open data. Or write to ceoflightmussy@gmail.com.
